How Do I Complete the New Jersey Background Check?
All New Jersey substitutes must complete their background check with the New Jersey Department of Education Office of Student Protection. The Office of Student Protection offers three distinct pathways to verify you are cleared to work through an entity such as Swing Education.
You can determine which path you should take by answering the questions available in the Background Check “To Do” module in your Swing account. If you do not see the Background Check module, you may be in a different stage of account set up – complete the steps shown in your account until you reach the Background Check module.

It is very important you complete the correct type of background check according to your circumstances and qualifications, as completing the incorrect background check can result in errors and significant delays in processing.
What Happens After I've Verified the Type of Background Check I Need?
Once you have verified which background check type you need to complete, you will receive instructions to do so in your Swing account. It is extremely important that you answer the questions in your Background Check module to determine which background check process you need to complete before you complete the corresponding background check pathway. If you aren’t sure which background check to complete, review the questions in the Background Check module of your Swing account.

How do I check the status of my Background Check?
If you would like to check the status of your background check, you can enter your information into the New Jersey DOE Office of Student Protection database. The New Jersey DOE typically updates records every Friday. If you see Swing Education’s county and district codes, as identified in your background check instruction page, that means that your background check has cleared for Swing. Download a copy of your Applicant Approval Employment History page and upload it to your Swing account under the final step of your Background Check module. If your background check is not complete and you have questions about its status within NJ DOE, you can reach out to them directly at OfficeofStudentProtection@doe.nj.gov.
How long will it take for my Transfer/Archive/New Applicant request to process?
Transfer and Archive requests are usually processed within 1-2 weeks. If you completed a New Applicant request the average processing time is 2-4 weeks. The NJ DOE updates records every Friday.
