Tips when the assignment or sub role is unclear

Ideas for what to do during an active request if you're unsure.

Updated yesterday

As a sub, you may encounter varying levels of organization across schools. If you're ever unsure about your duties:

  • Do not leave campus until officially dismissed by your point of contact or an administrator—they may reassign you during the day.

  • Always supervise students unless they’ve been officially dismissed or you're relieved by a verified staff member.

  • If you can’t find your point of contact, follow the school’s check-in procedure as best as possible, and contact Swing Support if needed.

  • You will still be paid if the school cancels your active sub request after you arrive, as long as you remain on campus and attempt to fulfill the assignment.

Lesson Plans

We know some schools may not readily have lesson plans available. Not to worry as Swing also has a Sub Plan AI Generator that can help when you're in a pinch. Just enter the details and let AI do the rest: SubPlan.ai.

How do I reach the school's point of contact?

Each request includes a point of contact listed by the school. Swing does not manage or verify info on the sub request, so please reach out to the listed contact for expectations or clarifications.

Real Situations to Prepare For:

  • No one answers at the front office—take a time-stamped photo as proof of arrival.

  • Two subs arrive for the same job—you may be sent home but will still be paid.

  • You’re told to wait and then left without direction—don’t leave students unattended.

  • You think you’re done early, but no one confirms—wait until officially dismissed.

  • Another teacher says you’re no longer needed—don’t leave until you verify with admin.
